About the event
Adam Smith's Big Ideas: Then and Now
Peter T. Calcagno, Ph.D., Professor of Economics | College of Charleston
Director & Founder | Center for Public Choice & Market Process
Two hundred and fifty years after the publication of The Wealth of Nations, what can Adam Smith still teach us about markets, trade, government, competition, and prosperity?
Dr. Peter Calcagno will revisit Smith's most influential ideas and examine their relevance to today's economic debates—from tariffs and protectionism to government intervention and the relationship between business and free markets.
The timing is particularly fitting: 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of The Wealth of Nations. Dr. Calcagno argues that many modern policies echo the mercantilist ideas Smith challenged in 1776. Importantly, his work also explores a distinction often lost in modern discussions of Smith: being pro-market is not necessarily the same as being pro-business.
