Relations between the U.S. and China have become increasingly strained, with each nation accusing the other of undermining national interests and societal stability. How can the most contentious issues in the relationship be addressed, without sacrificing American interests or inciting a violent conflict? Professor Kaup will share her expertise on the key issues driving this relationship, as well as potential paths forward for diplomacy and collaboration.


About the Speaker:

Katherine Palmer Kaup is James B. Duke Professor of Asian Studies and Politics and International Affairs at Furman University.  Her research focuses on ethnic minorities, rule of law, and human rights developments in China as well as on US-China relations and authoritarianism. She is the author of Creating the Zhuang: Ethnic Politics in China and several articles and chapters on ethnic minorities, and is editor and contributor to the textbook Understanding Contemporary Asia (2nd edition 2021).   She has served as a Director on the National Committee on US-China Relations Board, special adviser for Minority…
